Fencing: questions we hear most
Do I need a permit for a fence?
In most cities, yes — and many require a copy of your property survey showing exactly where the fence will sit. Height limits are usually stricter in front yards than in back. Your contractor will tell you what your city and HOA require.
How do I know where my property line is?
From your survey, not from the old fence. Existing fences are often a few inches or a few feet off. If you don’t have a survey, say so up front — building on the wrong side of a line is an expensive mistake to undo.
How deep do the posts go?
It depends on your frost depth, soil and the height of the fence. Colder regions need posts set below the frost line or the ground will lift them out over a few winters. Your contractor sets them to what your area requires.
Can you repair part of a fence instead of replacing it?
Usually yes. Resetting posts and replacing a run of boards is common and far cheaper. Matching older weathered wood exactly isn’t always possible, and your contractor will tell you how close it will get.
